What Is Wild Rice?The Wild Rice plant is native to North America and its grains have been harvested by Native Americans for thousands of years. Also called "Indian Rice", it comes in black, brown, and red varieties. It grows in slow moving rivers and marsh lands near the Great Lakes, Atlantic coast, and
Gulf of Mexico.
Early American people did not really need to cultivate this crop. They just harvested it by paddling their canoes through wetlands and hitting the bushes with a stick or paddle to knock the rice grains into the canoe. During this process many grains fell into the water conveniently planting next year's crop. Some Native American tribes still practice this type of traditional Wild Rice harvesting.
How To Cook Wild RiceAdd 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and simmer 40 minutes or until the water is absorbed. Check it often because it can go from underdone to burnt within minutes (either way it's ruined). Fluff with fork and let stand 5 minutes.
When cooking Wild Rice choose dishes that will be complimented by its nutty, smokey flavor and crunchy texture.
Raw (uncooked) Wild Rice will store almost
indefinitely, if stored properly.
