What Is Wild Rice?
The Wild Rice plant is native to North America and its grains have been harvested by Native Americans for
thousands of years. Also called "Indian Rice", it comes in black, brown, and red varieties. It grows in slow moving rivers and marsh lands near the Great Lakes, Atlantic
coast, and Gulf of Mexico.
Early American people did not really need to cultivate this crop. They just harvested it by paddling their canoes
through wetlands and hitting the bushes with a stick or paddle to knock the rice grains into the canoe. During this process many grains fell
into the water conveniently planting next year's crop. Some Native American tribes still practice this type of traditional Wild Rice harvesting.
