Benefits I have had from Steel Grain Oats and a Cooking Trick

by Joan Daniels
(Morgan Hill, Ca)

I have been eating Steel Grain Oats for the last ten days. I have found that eating the oats everyday has helped me to stay regular (not constipated). I usually have a battle with being constipated no matter how much water I drink (8-10 glasses a day) or greens I eat (which is at least twice a day). I even take a fiber supplement. I still had trouble. I also find that if I should eat sweets I would be even more constipated. I did try other grains but what I have found is that eating Steel Grain Oats everyday has eliminated the problem.

I have a very easy way to cook them, too! What you do is go 3 to 1 water and oats. Put them in a pot, let the water come a boil, cover them with a top and turn them off. Come back in an hour or two or even in the morning and they are ready to eat. You only need to warm them if you like them hot.

How to Pressure Cook Steel Cut Oats
by: Kate

Use a pressure cooker. Put 1 cup water in bottom of pressure cooker and use a trivet (or 3 rings from Mason jars). In a seperate heat proof bowl (I use Pyrex), combine 1/2 c steel cut oats and 1 cup water.

You may want to add some other things like raisons, cinnamon, salt, vanilla etc. Sit the oven proof bowl in the pressure cooker, on top of the trivet/Mason jar rings.

Close the lid, bring to pressure, time the heat for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and let the pressure subside without opening valves etc (slow release method).

Use tongs to remove the bowl from the pressure cooker and voila, you're done except for the eating.

Thanks for the Cooking Tip
by: Versagrain

Thanks Joan for the easy cooking tip. We love anything that is "set-it and forget-it". Another easy way to cook steel cut oats is to use a rice cooker:

Combine 1/2 cup oats and 1 cup water in a rice cooker. They are done in 15-20 minutes with out any worries (boiling, stirring, etc.). Makes 2 servings.
