It contains both soluble (beta glucans) and insoluble fiber which play an important role in lowering cholesterol, promoting regularity, proper digestion, and preventing high blood sugar levels. It is also a great source of selenium which helps reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. It provides phosphorus, copper, and manganese, as well.

It is the bran and endosperm layer of grains that contains these nutrients. So to take advantage of these health benefits, more fully, try to purchase hulled barley since it has not had any of its bran or endosperm layer polished or pearled off.
